This article is a celebration of one of the most popular toys of all time. There is one toy in particular that has been a part of every generation’s childhood and continues to be that way even today; without much sign of changing. The Teddy Bear.
Teddy bears have been part of our culture for centuries in one form or another. Children have always enjoyed having the comfort of a soft toy or blanket to take to bed with them, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the name “Teddy Bear” came into wide use. It was named after the American president Theodore Roosevelt, following a hunting trip when he refused to kill a bear that his colleagues had caught for him and tied to a tree.
They have since been known as teddy bears and children have continued to enjoy them. Mass production of teddy bears has continued to be a lucrative business and many teddy bears are made by particularly expensive designers too; although these bears are primarily collectables horded by adults; quite sad when you consider that they may well never be played with.
Modern Teddy Bears
These days teddy bears come in all shapes and sizes and children (and adults) can continue this glorious love affair with the nation’s favourite toy by dressing their teddy bears up in a number of different outfits and even build their own bears: choosing its clothes, eyes etc, and even its stuffing.
They’re not only the traditional style of bear in design either. Nowadays anything that is soft and stuffed is considered to be a teddy bear, and many people now refer to teddy bears as cuddly toys. The name still lives on however and the teddy bear will always be one of the most popular presents you can buy for a child at Christmas time or for their birthday. It’s probably the only toy that many of us keep into adulthood just because of the fond memories we have with them.
